House Repossession - Support and advice (England)

Your lender may seek to repossess your home if you are in mortgage arrears. However, you may be able to prevent court action by negotiating with your lender. Visit Shelter's website for detailed advice about repossession, including ways to prevent it and court action.

Legal advice is available if you are at risk of having your property repossessed, and you may be eligible to get legal aid to pay for your legal advice.

Before any court action can be pursued, your lender must follow certain steps to help you keep your home. They must tell you exactly how much you owe along with any associated interest costs, and consider a request to change the way you pay your mortgage. You may be able to prevent court action by negotiating with your lender. Shelter details the rules your mortgage lender must follow before going to court.
